I am not sure we are "all expected to be wealthy" ... and in that context, I don't think that the gifts need to be expensive.

The practical issue is that they have to be small, to fit inside your luggage .. but I don't see cost as a hurdle.

I think the key is that you should look for some things that are UNIQUE ... from your own country ... small handcrafts, books (scenery for example, or illustrated histories), CDs (eg. folk music, indigenous music), interesting foods, etc.

(but buy them downtown, not at the last minute at your airport of departure!!)
